My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A terrific mystery set in a spooky forest with Midsommar vibes. Had me guessing with every page turn.

The Colony: Faith and Blood in a Promised Land by Sally Denton

The Colony: Faith and Blood in a Promised LandThe Colony: Faith and Blood in a Promised Land by Sally Denton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was well done and informative but a little dense and dry. There was a lot of information and it didn't seem particularly well organized.

This was readable but it read like a bad made-for-TV, after school special thriller starring Tori Spelling…

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Demon CopperheadDemon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I started reading this book not having read the synopsis and not really knowing where the book was going but I couldn't put it down. As the story took shape and I could see where it was going it drew a haunting and tragic picture of the devastation of opiates in Appalachia.

Cult Following by J. W. Ocker

Cult Following: The Extreme Sects That Capture Our Imaginations―and Take Over Our LivesCult Following: The Extreme Sects That Capture Our Imaginations―and Take Over Our Lives by J.W. Ocker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A quick overview of some of the most infamous cults and some others that I hadn't yet heard about, this book is informative and humorous. As someone who had already read much of the bibliography, I still learned new things!

The ReformatoryThe Reformatory by Tananarive Due
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My first five star read of the year! A heartwrenching story with twists and turns, ghosts, and monsters. Spooky and atmospheric, this is the kind of book that sticks with you for a long time.

American Zion: A New History of Mormonism by Benjamin E. Park

American Zion: A New History of MormonismAmerican Zion: A New History of Mormonism by Benjamin E. Park
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I appreciate the throughness and depth that this book demonstrated. You can see that transparency was attempted but the voice wasn't entirely objective. Just considering the racism so inherent in the system, how it is doctrine and not just "a practice", I feel like the book was too sympathetic to the LDS church and tried to give them more "benefit of the doubt" than is deserved. However, I still learned new information and will be adding the physical book to my reference library.

The House of Last Resort by Christopher Golden

The House of Last ResortThe House of Last Resort by Christopher Golden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book will make you want to move to Italy and buy a house with a sinister reputation. The pace was perfect and it was properly chilling. Just the perfect spooky read. My only complaint is the constant mental battle of the characters and their acceptance of good and evil forces. It became a bit exhausting.

I received a complimentary eGalley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Who to Believe by Edwin Hill

Who to BelieveWho to Believe by Edwin Hill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a rollercoaster of a thriller with so many twists and turns. A character driven narrative that tells multiple storylines around the same event and each person reveals something new and shocking that keeps the reader guessing. I had a hard time putting this one down and read it in less than 24 hours. My only complaint is that sometimes the retellings could get a little redundant but otherwise, a fantastic story.

I received a complimentary eGalley of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
